Telop
How do I use Telop?
Swipe left or right to change cards. Touch and hold to pause, and again to play. Swipe up to open Settings, where you can choose Japanese, English or both, and find the data sources and credits. Pull down to close it. If you'd rather tap, touch the picture and a SETUP button appears in the corner for a few seconds.
How does Telop choose my city?
Telop opens on whichever of its eight cities is nearest you. The first time you open it, iOS asks whether Telop can use your approximate location. If you say no, Telop picks a city from your phone's time zone and shows a short notice explaining that. Because some cities share a time zone, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, allowing location gives a better match. You can change this any time in the Settings app under Telop, then Location.
The picture says NO SIGNAL. Is something broken?
Telop couldn't get fresh data. If nothing has come in, or what it has is more than six hours old, the picture is replaced by NO SIGNAL, or RECEIVING while it's trying. If the newest data is more than an hour old, a line at the bottom reads NO SIGNAL · DATA AS OF and the time it arrived. If one source, like the radar, hasn't answered, that card plays its original 1984 picture instead of passing old data off as tonight's. Check your internet connection and give it a minute. Some services limit how often they can be asked.
Why is there no baseball card today?
On the North American reels, the results card shows tonight's major-league games. On off days, in the off-season, or when scores can't be reached, it's left out. The Kansai reel always plays the original 1984 Japanese league results.
Why does the picture look worn, with noise and color bleeding?
That's on purpose. Telop shows the broadcast the way a home VHS recording of it looks now, tape noise and all.
Does Telop track my location?
No. If you allow it, each time Telop opens it checks your approximate location, on your phone, to pick the nearest city, then discards it. It's never saved and never sent anywhere. More in our privacy policy.
Is Telop accessible?
Telop works with VoiceOver. It names each card, where it sits in the broadcast and the time it speaks for, and you can step through cards, pause, and open Settings from the actions rotor. It doesn't yet read out the numbers on a card; that's coming. If something is hard to read or use, please tell us. We treat that as a bug.
Can I suggest a city?
Yes, please do. Each city is drawn by hand in the style of the original broadcasts, so new ones take time, but requests decide which come next.
